Backsaas Manifesto
SaaS, and the world changed.
Inspired by the book The World Is Flat, one day I put the following on the front page of my business’ website:
Today, like never before, small businesses have the tools available to conduct business at levels that were previously reserved to big business (and big business budgets).
Technology and an abundance of business information (including resources from organizations like the SBA) have flattened the playing field. It is now easier than ever to outsource and automate; marketing to potential clients around the world, or just better marketing to potential clients locally, has become a reality.
Will your company take advantage of these new developments, or will you leave that to the competition?
Many of the “world flattners” mentioned in that book I was already witnessing first hand when I first founded my business in 2005 (whilst attending university in Japan).
I saw how “the steriods” (mobile technology, voip, etc) where turning the world upside down.
(ASIDE: Japan has long been the world leader in mobile technology. When I first arrived in Japan in 2002 the free mobile phone I received with my cheap student monthly plan came equipped with a camera phone, internet connection, gps, and EMAIL! It also had perfect signal three stories underground on the Oedo Subway line! that remember was in 2002)
I saw how the open source movement was drastically changing the way we collaborate and how the world’s most powerful software (think wordpress) is built.
And…
I saw how the world of Software as a service (saas) was making it possible to run a business from absolutely anywhere, and I wanted in!
SO, all of that leads us to the manifesto, meaning and mission of backsaas. What is backsaas?
It is a rebellion against:
- the inconviences of “stationary” software (software that sits on your computer in point A and is inaccessible at point B)
- the bulkiness of traditional business infrastructures
- costly proprietary software affordable only to big business budgets
It is a celebration of:
- the art of bootstrapping
- simplification
- full integration
- freedom from location (I have another website dedicated to this and geo-arbitrage: location free income )
